Yoga as Therapy
1 hour with Ria Nieboer
Yoga as Therapy – Phoenix Rising Yoga and Meditation The guiding principle of the Phoenix Rising Method is engaging yoga as a transformative experience to create a different state of Being while recognizing that this change must be done through the body–it cannot be done through cognitive processing. There are six phases to the Phoenix Rising Yoga and Meditation Class, with transitions in between. Each phase moves progressively deeper, beginning with a focus on the physical body and progressing toward inward contemplation. The process is anchored by embracing an edge and breathing, to gradually shift from mental activity to a more direct, present-centered experience in the body, and focusing on the wisdom that arises. In the final phase of the PRYT process, we bring back cognitive awareness to help us integrate what stood out in the practice and apply it to life off the mat. The class will conclude with a short theme-based dharma talk and guidance to apply the theme in the following week. You will learn how to listen to your body to bring more wisdom, clarity, tranquility, and contentment to your life. • Class Level: all levels • Ease/Intensity: Gentle – mostly slow sustained movements, slightly vigorous warm-up. Adaptions, where needed, are encouraged • Props: recommended – something comfortable to sit on for meditation, enough space to be able to swing your arms, and a light blanket to cover up, and a strap, belt, or tie. • A 45-minute practice with a 15 min participant-to-facilitator feedback time. The session will be recorded for facilitator’s review and learning. • Facilitator: Ria Anastasia Nieboer, ERYT- 200 LMSW CAADC ADS who is a student of Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy School since 2015.
